Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation's
Division of Banks and Real Estate ("DFPR-DBRE")

The Illinois state agency division that charters (or licenses), supervises and regulates state-chartered banks and state-chartered savings banks (thrifts), corporate fiduciaries, mortgage bankers and brokers, real estate appraisers, check printers, real estate brokers and agents, leasing agents, timeshares salespersons, pawnbrokers, and auctioneers.

Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation's
Division of Financial Institutions ("DFPR-DFI")

Division of Insurance

The Illinois state agency division that licenses and regulates insurance agents, agencies and underwriters, including financial institution subsidiaries engaged in insurance sales and financial institution employees who sell insurance.

Office of the Comptroller of the Currency
The federal agency that charters, supervises and regulates national-chartered banks.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
The federal agency that oversees federal deposit insurance for all deposit-taking banks and thrifts. It also is the primary federal regulator for state-chartered banks that are not members of the Federal Reserve System.

Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System
The federal agency that oversees the 12 Federal Reserve Banks (which operate the federal payment system, provide liquidity to members through their discount windows, and act as fiscal agents for federal agencies) and that supervises and regulates bank holding companies and financial holding companies. It also is the primary federal regulator for state-chartered banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System. In addition, the Federal Reserve Board exercises supervisory and regulatory authority for all banks and thrifts with respect to consumer credit protection, unfair and deceptive practices, international banking activities, and prohibited interlocks with the securities industry and with other financial institutions.

Office of Thrift Supervision
The federal agency that charters, supervises and regulates all federally chartered savings banks and savings and loan associations, as well as state-chartered savings and loan associations, and savings and loan holding associations.

National Credit Union Administration
The federal agency that charters, supervises and regulates federally chartered credit unions and that insures both federally and state-chartered credit unions (with the exception of privately insured state-chartered credit unions, of which there are several dozen in Illinois).

Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council ("FFIEC")
The federal agency that is empowered to prescribe uniform principles, standards and report forms for the federal banking agencies (the OCC, FED, FDIC, OTS and NCUA).

Federal Housing Finance Board
The independent federal agency established to oversee the 12 Federal Home Loan Banks, including the Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago.

Federal Home Loan Bank of Chicago
Provides its members with short- and long-term funding for housing loans, with maturities ranging from one day to 20 years.

Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight
The independent agency established under the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development to oversee FANNIE MAE and FREDDIE MAC.

Fannie Mae
Purchases mortgages from lenders and either holds them in its portfolio or packages them into securities that are publicly traded.

Freddie Mac
Purchases mortgages from lenders and either holds them in its portfolio or packages them into securities that are publicly traded.

Department of Housing and Urban Development ("HUD")
Among other things, HUD issues the regulations under the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act ("RESPA").

Securities & Exchange Commission ("SEC")
The federal agency that oversees publicly held companies as well as other key participants in the securities world, including stock exchanges, broker-dealers, investment advisors, mutual funds, and public utility holding companies.

Federal Election Commission ("FEC")
An independent regulatory agency charged with administering and enforcing the Federal Election Campaign Act, the statute that governs the financing of federal elections.
